Bilateral trade with Kenya should receive a new impetus for development - Olga Trofimtseva

"The main topics of negotiations were the development of bilateral trade and cooperation in agriculture. Kenyan side has shown great interest in the Ukrainian agricultural machineries for small and medium farmers, as the ministry is actively working on mechanization of agricultural production in the country.

Within the Trade Mission to Kenya and Tanzania there was held a meeting of the Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Ms. Olga Trofimtseva and Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, the trade representative of Ukraine Ms. Natalia Mykolska with the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of  Kenya Andrew K. Tuimur and his colleagues.

"The main topics of negotiations were the development of bilateral trade and cooperation in agriculture. Kenyan side has shown great interest in the Ukrainian agricultural machineries for small and medium farmers, as the ministry is actively working on mechanization of agricultural production in the country. Furthermore, great interest was shown by Kenyan partners to technological solutions for the storage of grains and generally to cooperate with Ukraine in the field of agricultural technologies "- the Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine said.

As Olga Trofimtseva noted, great potential for Ukrainian exports to Kenya exists for such goods as: meals (including for fish and poultry), apple juice and concentrates, seeds, poultry and pork. For its part, an increase in imports from Kenya of coffee, tea, fruit, nuts such as makadami and cut flowers could be interesting for Ukraine.

Specific issues of cooperation in veterinary and phytosanitary regulation were raised by representative of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection Ms. Victoria Bebyh.

In order to enhance not only trade but also cooperation and investment relations between two countries parties agreed to finalize work on a drafting of Memorandum of Understanding between the two ministries, which should include all the key areas of interest of agrarian business of two countries.

In addition, it was agreed to organize a business mission of representatives of Kenyan companies headed by representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Kenya to Ukraine in the first half of 2017 in order to establish direct relations with Ukrainian partners. During the visit documents on bilateral cooperation is expected be signed.

During 10 months of 2016 the trade turnover between Ukraine and the Republic of Kenya amounted to $ 27.733 thousands. Exports amounted to $ 22.787 thousands, import - $ 4946 thousands. Ukraine exported:

- Wheat - 123,3 ths. tons in the amount of $ 19 million;

- Vegetables dried beans - 6.4 ths. tons with worth of $ 2.9 million

- Sunflower oil - 646 tons with worth of $ 529 thousands;

- Soybean oil - 218 tons with worth of $ 174 thousands;

- Alcoholic beverages - 20 tons with worth of $ 24 thousands;

- Whey - 14 tons with worth of $ 7 thousands.
